Machinery Pete: 4 Factors Weighing on 4WD Tractor Values

October 26, 2020

If you ask me, “Pete, what’s shaking with used 4WD Tractor values,” you’ll get a four-pronged reply. Here’s what’s on my radar:

1. Buyer demand is still solid in the 1-to-3-year-old range. These machines are obviously a favorable price versus the cost of new one. Also, not as many new 4WD tractor models were sold two to three years ago. So when one pops up for sale, strong buyer demand awaits. A good example is a 2018 John Deere 9520R 4WD with 145 hours that sold on March 31 in west-central Illinois for $300,000.

2. The magical 10-year-old mark, give or take, is hot. I’ve been seeing strong buyer demand on good condition units with low hours. Here again, the price comparison versus new machines pushes potential buyers toward scouting out that nice 10-ish-year-old option. Of course, this also brings in the pre-DEF, pre-Tier IV motivated buyers. For example, a 2011 John Deere 9630 4WD with 929 hours sold for $203,000 on Oct. 2 at a southwest Minnesota farm auction. That price is the third-highest in the U.S. for that model in seven years.

3. Demand is softer for machines in the 5-year-old range. On the auction front, I saw a 2014 New Holland T9.450 4WD with 5,600 hours sell for $75,000 on July 25 at a consignment auction in northeast Missouri. Another example is a 2014 John Deere 9560R with 4,463 hours, which sold for $129,889 (USD) on April 6 at a central Saskatchewan auction.

4. Buyer heat is intensifying on vintage 4WD tractors. On Sept. 5 at a collector auction in northeast Indiana, a John Deere Wagner WA-14 4WD was on the auction block. It was not the prettiest to look at, as it had plenty of rust. But it did run. It sold for $74,000. Why so high? It was one of only 31 built. The following month, during an Oct. 7 Bigiron.com online auction, a nifty 1979 Massey Ferguson 4880 4WD from northwest Iowa with 3,119 hours sold for $16,250. That’s the highest auction price in more than three years.
